Winter Dates

Snow man and woman on a bench
When it's cold outside and we're all feeling a little lazy, finding fun things to do around the house together, or even outside in the elements, is an important part of spending time with your date. Try some of the fun date ideas and suggestions from this list to keep busy during the long winter months:

By the Fire
Light a cozy fire and have fun playing board games, putting together a puzzle, listening to an old radio show , or just sipping homemade hot cocoa and cuddling for a night. If your home doesn't have a fireplace, try lighting candles. Lots and lots of candles.

Get Tropical
If you're dreaming of warm summer days, take a break from the winter with a day at the beach! Crank up the heat, put some beach chairs right in the middle of your living room, and set the mood for a day seaside. Use decorations like beach towels, shells, beach balls, a cooler full of soda or beer (margaritas anyone?), Hawaiian shirts, and plenty of coconut oil. For food try watermelon, cold fried chicken, potato chips, and homemade chocolate chip cookies. You can also go with beach theme music or an ocean soundtrack (audio of waves in theme date).

Head to the Snow
Even if you're not in snow country, take a road trip for a day in the snow at least once this year. Make a snowman, go skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, have snowball fights, or just take a quiet walk in the wild. You'll be sorry if you don't!

Winter Bonfire
It may be cold outside but you can stay warm with a winter bonfire! Have fun with a smaller fire for two or invite your friends to bring lots of wood, food, and drinks. Consider the beach, desert, or other remote areas for hassle-free fun, but make sure there are plenty of designated drivers and that fires (and drinking) are allowed at your destination of choice.

Have a Tasting
A tasting is basically just getting a number of different types of things you like, i.e. 5 different chocolates, and trying them one at a time to compare and contrast. In between tastes you drink or eat something to clear your palate and move on to the next one. It's a fun way to learn more about the types of foods you like and enjoy good flavors. Tastings are generally for things like wine, cheese, and chocolate, but they can really be about anything you like. Say different brands of vanilla ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, types of olives, etc. This is a fun group event if you want to invite other couples.

Oscar Season
After the Oscar nominations are announced in early February, pick up the movies you haven't seen yet and do a movie marathon before the winners are picked in March. Stock up on popcorn, theater candy, and soda pop, and when you're finished write out each of your picks for the different categories. I'm sure you can think of some creative bets to make on the outcome.

Feel the Heat
Tired of being cold? Warm up with Hot (Bikram) Yoga, which is basically just like regular yoga but in a really hot room. The point of it is to sweat like crazy and remove toxins from your body. If you're adventurous enough to give it a try, remember to bring water and a towel. If yoga sounds like too much work how about warming up at a nearby hot springs, outdoor Jacuzzi, or even staying at home and sharing a candlelit bath.

Winter Sports
Tis the season for football, basketball, and hockey. Watch a pro or minor league game, host a playoff party, or get out there and play one of these winter sports. Ever tried curling?

The Great Empty Outdoors
It's not always easy to enjoy the beach or your favorite hiking spots during the summer when they've been completely overrun by your fellow humans. But in the winter? Nobody's around. Put on some warm clothes, grab a thermos of hot cocoa or soup, and go enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. You could even bring along a hot picnic lunch or find a spot that allows fires.

A Little Culture
Along the lines of staying inside to keep warm, winter is an ideal time to see what's showing at your local museums, art galleries, live theaters, aquariums (culture?), and other indoor spots.

Take a Class
While spring and summer are great times to learn how to go rock climbing and surfing, winter is the time for more relaxed activities like cooking, dancing, painting, drawing, etc. Explore your creative sides together this winter with classes at a local business or community college.

Electronic Gaming Fun
The glory days of the arcade have long since vanished but there's still a place for the ones with those big, sit-down racing games, air hockey, skeeball, and you know what. Out here in San Diego we have Dave & Busters but I'm sure there's something like it in your area. Head over there for an afternoon of friendly competition and lunch.
