The Sniff Kiss

June 17, 2009

I was browsing dating blog and noticed comments about something called a sniff-kiss. Being curious, I searched the term to see if it was insider slang or a real thing and what I found was pretty interesting. Apparently sniff kissing is how Thai people show affection in public. In their culture, kissing on the mouth anyplace outside of the bedroom is only done by barbaric westerners (that's us), so instead they will sniff-kiss their loved ones.

And what is a sniff-kiss exactly? The Thai name for a sniff kiss is ‘Hawm Kaem’which literally means ‘sweet smell cheek’ and it’s simple; first, lean in to your partner and move your nose close to their neck, cheek, hair, or shoulder. Inhale deeply. That's it, you just gave them a sniff-kiss! It’s a way to capture the scent of someone you love and is supposed to be pretty exciting for the kissee too. I'm pro sniff-kiss, go out and give your date one today!

The following picture isn't perfect, but it was the closest I could find. To see other types of kisses, take a look at the 43 Kisses date idea.

That's so cute! I tried to give my boyfriend one a minute ago and he looked at me like I was crazy! I think he'll get used to them though. heehee

My lola or grandmother would always greet me this way. It was a tradition in pre-Hispanic Philippines. It can be found from Thailand to Hawaii and in Alaska. Aloha means, " breath of life," though translation is vague, it shows that the sniff kiss is a form of greeting and connection to the other person.   Mabuhay from VA Beach!
