Top 10 Chick Flicks that Guys will Actually Enjoy

June 2, 2009

Ok, so you want to watch a romantic film with that special person, but you can't stomach the thought of sitting through The Notebook (guys) or you're worried about hearing him fidget and sigh all through the movie (we're talking about The Notebook again girls). What you need is a movie with some romance in it, but not the over-the-top, contrived sappiness that makes guys cringe. To solve this problem, I've put together a list of movies with enough romance for the girls, but not too much for the guys.

  1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
This one's a bittersweet story about the different experiences and opportunities that come and go as we make out way through life, all told through the eyes of a man who ages in reverse. I think Kate Blanchett was miscast in this but Brad Pitt did a good job and old-man Brad Pitt was great.
  2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
In this trippy, off-beat comedy Jim Carey finds out his ex-girlfriend (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased and decides to do the same. It's weird, but great.
  3. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Watch it and find out why men and women can never truly be friends. I just saw this a few months ago and it still had me cracking up. An entertaining film with good insights about the differences between men and women. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
  4. The Princess Bride (1987)
This is a very funny take on the classic hero-rescues-the-princess fairy tale. Great characters and dialog, along with nothing but clean humor.
  5. The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
One of only two non-comedic romances on the list, this is set in colonial America and follows a white man raised as a Mohican as he tries to protect his love during the French and Indian war. Some good action. Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe.
  6. Honeymoon in Vegas (1992)
Nicolas Cage loses his fiancé to James Caan in a fixed poker game and spends the rest of the movie humiliating himself as he tries to get her back. You will be amazed to learn that Sarah Jessica Parker was once so very hot.
  7. Walk the Line (2005)
This is the biography of singer Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix, crazy as he's become, does an excellent job portraying the singer and shows off a good voice of his own.
  8. Bull Durham (1988)
Kevin Costnar plays Crash Davis, a minor league baseball catcher who is assigned to tutor a moronic pitching prodigy in the ways of baseball, life, and love. Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon co-star.
  9. As Good as it Gets (1997)
Worth watching just to see Jack Nicholson offend everyone and everything he comes in contact with. You'll love to hate him. With Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear.
  10. Definitely, Maybe (2008)
A soon-to-be-divorced father gives his daughter the lowdown about how he met her mother and the twists and turns of his romantic life. Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, and Rachel Weisz.
