Say it with Flowers

Give the Gift of Flowers!

These days some people think flowers are a little old-fashioned, but I disagree, I think they're a classic that never really goes out of style. Women will always love them because they're fresh, beautiful, smell great, and are a physical display of your feelings.

Now most guys will stop by the supermarket or florist and just pick out a bouquet that looks nice, which is fine, but why not go the extra mile and choose flowers that tell a story and have meaning? Most of us pretty much know that red flowers symbolize love, but there was a time when all flowers had different meanings and purposes. It was back during the Victorian era when displays of love or emotions were considered inappropriate, so an entire language evolved around the giving of flowers. Using these old, romantic meanings, you can buy flowers to wish her luck, compliment her character, reminisce about good times you've had, or just tell her she has beautiful eyes. It's a unique slant on a classic gift and she'll love that you took the time to do something special!

When you do present her with a bouquet, let her know what they mean with a simple, heartfelt note like "At lunch today the waitress reminded me of the one in Hawaii who dropped our lunches on the floor and it brought me back to all of the amazing things we did there. I chose these flowers because they symbolize remembrance and I wanted to let you know how often I think of you and what an important part of my life you've become." Ok, maybe too thick for some of you, but you get the idea. If you don't want to go with the message, maybe just pick up her birth month flower.

I'm basically addressing this section to the guys since, well, let's face it, they'll be doing the giving. And don't worry about them feeling left out girls, this is the way they like it. It doesn't matter how nice you think flowers make his place look or smell, trust me, he doesn't really want them.

Aster (September)

aster Sentimental Recollections, Daintiness
Give asters to show that you've been thinking about the fun times you've had together, or that a piece of your day was reminiscent of her. They complement a framed photo of you together, an object that relates to an event in your relationship, or a letter you've written about why a certain moment was important. Asters also say that you understand and appreciate her feminine, girly side. Maybe she pulled away from getting muddy the other day or baiting a fishing hook and you want to let her know it's ok, you like her that way!

Pink can be sent as a thank you for something she's done, while red says "I want you" (as usual), and white may wish her luck with a test, game, or promotion. Send yellow ones to a girl who absolutely amazes you! But if she keeps trying to drag you to a baby shower or the ballet, striped carnations are a nice way to say "I love you, but no."

Red chrysanthemums are your basic love flowers, but white and yellow have some interesting meanings. Give white in appreciation of a girl who is honest with themselves or others, or to express honest feelings or stories you've been waiting to share. Yellow is a great way to let her know that you love her positive attitude, or to express feelings that she may not yet know exist.

Daffodil (March) or Narcissus (December)

Self-esteem, self-love, vanity

Is she very self-confident, maybe even a little vain? Daffodils are a fun way to show her you recognize that fact and love her anyway!

Delphinium (July)

Boldness, beauty, big heart

Is she the type of girl who comes up with a risky plan and actually follows through? Does she have room in her heart for all types of people and things? Or is she just plain beautiful? Let her know with a bouquet of delphiniums!

Freesia

Trust, innocence
Freesias can say you've gotten to the point where you believe in her completely and know she would never do anything to hurt you. They can also be used to let her know she drives you crazy with desire, but I'm guessing this is not a secret. Maybe just a reminder then.

Tiger lilies are also nice to wish her the best on a business venture or when working hard toward a career goal. Yellow is for the party girls.
