Creating your own romantic, funny, or sexy scratch off cards takes less than 5 minutes (it's true!) and costs less than $5. Even better, if you have a friend who might want to surprise their partner with a fun gift too, then get together and have a good time making them while you cut the cost in half!

I've put together a video walk-thru and some easy step-by-step instructions on how to make custom scratch off cards with our templates. The links to the right have ideas about prizes to offer and instructions for making fully customized scratchcards using Microsoft Word and other basic programs.

Step-by-Step Instructions

From the main scratchers page, open the printable Acrobat file for the design you've chosen. The sample pdfs are good for browsing designs but will not print well.

You may want to save the Acrobat file to your local hard drive for future use or to save the text you entered into form fields. Select File -> Save Page As (Firefox) or File -> Save As (IE) and put it in the directory of your choice. If you've chosen this option, open the Acrobat file on your hard drive now and close the one on the Hot Date Ideas site.

Scroll down to find a layout you like. Many cards will have a number of templates where the winning spots are moved around or with different prize boxes (I.e. scaleable prizes vs. win/lose). Different layouts are provided so that the player can try the game a few times (in case they lose or want to push their luck) without knowing where the winning spots are ahead of time.

Fill-in the light blue form fields with whatever text you like (the blue will not print on your final card). If you'd like some ideas about prizes to offer, take a look at our Scratch Off Card Prize Ideas page.

Print the card, making sure you only output the current page. Scratchers are generally on a thicker stock of paper so drop by your local Fedex/Kinkos or other copy shop and pick up a few sheets of 80 lb. paper. Tell them you only want a few sample sheets to see if they'll feed through your printer and you may get them for free. 80 lb. has an authentic feel and is the heaviest weight that will feed properly through most home printers.
